Machine Guards - general information

What are Machine Guards?
Machine Guards are physical barriers placed in proximity to industrial machines that contribute to the safety of operators in the work area. These devices are designed to prevent access to the hazardous parts of the machine and reduce the risk of injuries. Additionally, they can protect equipment from damage caused by accidental collisions and maintain separation between high-risk work areas and surrounding ones.
The use of Machine Guards is one of the prevention and protection measures indicated by the Risk Analysis.
What is Risk Analysis?
Risk Analysis is a process that defines the Safety and Health protection requirements applicable to the machine/equipment, in compliance with current regulations. Additionally, it determines the necessary protection measures to eliminate identified hazards or reduce associated risks and residual risks. Finally, it can provide indications for the scheduled maintenance of equipment, machines, and plants to ensure their compliance with the essential safety requirements over time.
It is recommended to always entrust the Risk Analysis to qualified and experienced personnel in the field of workplace safety.
What is the difference between on-board Machine Guards and perimeter Machine Guards?
On-board Machine Guards are physical barriers placed directly on the machine itself around its moving parts, so as to prevent access to hazardous areas and reduce the risk of injuries. Machine guarding Fences, on the other hand, are physical barriers placed around the machine but not directly on it.
Is it mandatory to install Machine Guards to protect work areas?
Yes. EU and international directives establish the obligation to protect machinery with Guards that comply with specific construction and safety distance requirements. Without them, it is not possible for machinery to operate.
Why is it important to choose Machine Safety Guards that comply with regulations?
Machine Safety Guards complying with regulations are designed, manufactured, and tested according to the highest Safety Standards. In addition to contributing to the protection of operators, investing in compliant and high-quality Machine Guards can prevent fines, sanctions and production stops.
In which sectors are Machine Guards used?
Machine Guards find application in a wide range of sectors, such as paper, wood, glass, steel, plastic, bottling and packaging. Specific sector needs are paramount in determining the features of the chosen protection. Food, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries, for example, require the use of Guards that fulfil high hygiene standards.
What materials are used to produce Machine Guards?
Physical industrial Machine Guards can be made from various materials such as steel, aluminum, polycarbonate, etc. The choice depends on several factors, such as the production context or environmental conditions. It is important to consult qualified professionals to determine the most suitable material to use according to these needs.
Is it mandatory to provide maintenance for Machine Guards?
Periodic cleaning and inspection of the Machine Guards are strongly recommended to prevent damage or malfunctions. The replacement of any worn or damaged parts must be done immediately to ensure worker safety and minimize potential machine downtime.

Our Industrial Safety Fences are designed to provide several benefits, such as: quick installation, resistance to impacts or aggressive environments, versatility, adaptability. Our staff will guide you free of charge in choosing the type of Fence that best suits your priorities and the features of the area that needs protection.
What is the difference between Satech Products, Systems, and Solutions?
For “Products”, we mean the panels, posts, brackets, doors, locks, and accessories, which are the components of safety perimeters. Products can be standard in stock, standard non-stock or customized (also known as CustomGuard), each coming with different order preparation times.
“Systems” are combinations of basic products (posts, panels, fixing elements) designed to meet the most common needs. They can be either Framed (BASIC, STRONG, and FastGuard) or Frameless (AdaptaGuard and BlueGuard), each with different features and purposes.
“Solutions” for Industrial Safety Fencing can be composed of standard, customized, or tailor-made products. They can be created by using one or more of our systems or even be custom-built and designed. Our Solutions are always tailored to the specific needs of each customer.
What is the cost per meter of Satech Machine Guard Fencing?
To determine the cost per meter of a given Fence, it is necessary to define some fundamental information, such as: panels/posts size and finish; the System used; number and type of doors; etc. A Safety Fencing Solution is made of several different products and, therefore, its cost depends on several factors.

2.Technical features
What materials are Satech Machine Safety Fences made of?
Our welded mesh and full sheet metal Fences are made of high-quality steel, mostly from recycled raw materials. The posts and panels of the BlueGuard Industrial Safety Fencing, instead, are made of passivated AISI 304L stainless steel.
For transparent panels and windows, we use 4 mm-thick polycarbonate. AdaptaGuard fixing elements are made of high-strength technopolymer, while BlueGuard inserts are manufactured in food-certified DOMAMID® 6G30FC technopolymer.
What are the heights and widths of Satech Machine Safety Fences?
Our Systems (BASIC, STRONG, FastGuard, AdaptaGuard and BlueGuard) feature standard heights ranging from 1640 to 3140 mm depending on the System. The 7 standard widths of framed panels range from 200 to 1500 mm, but they can be combined to obtain intermediate sizes in 100 mm increments and adapt perfectly to any layout. The standard widths of frameless panels range from 196 to 1988 mm and can be easily modified on-site if needed.
Upon request, we produce panels with custom sizes and posts with non-standard heights.
What is the size of the Satech mesh?
The size of the Satech mesh is 20x100 mm for framed panels, with a corresponding slot size of 17x97 mm. The mesh size of frameless panels is 32x68 mm, with a slot size of 28x64 mm.
At what distance from the hazard can Satech Perimeter Fences be installed?
The opening of the Satech mesh allows to install framed Guards at a minimum distance of 120 mm from hazard, while frameless Guards can be installed at a minimum distance of 200 mm (as per EN ISO 13857, 4.2.4.1 – «Access through regular openings»). This reduces the amount of space occupied by the safety perimeter.
3.Setting up your Satech Machine Guard Fencing
Which options are available for the setup of Satech Industrial Safety Fences?
Our Fencings can be completed with:
• Doors with various types of movement and opening sizes to allow access to the machinery;
• Panels in different materials (mesh, solid sheet metal, polycarbonate, or mixed) to protect from scraps ejection and/or to ensure visibility of the hazard zone;
• Locking systems with different functions, such as magnet locks, mechanical locks and interlocks;
• Brackets for locks and locking systems;
• Accessories to adapt the Fence to specific needs.
What is the most suitable Locking System for Satech Industrial Safety Fences?
The choice of the locking system depends on the evaluation of the required safety functions, which is carried out during the Risk Analysis. The EN ISO 13849-1 Standard defines the requirements for designing and implementing control systems, which includes locks installed on Guards. Each safety function comes with a Required Performance Level (PLr) to reduce the risk of injury and damage, calculated based on the severity, frequency, and possibility of avoiding the hazard.
